Introduction to Art is an introductory survey of the creative process, elements of design, the principles of design and an introduction to the variety of genre that are present in two-dimensional art. UC/CSU approved for Visual and Performing Arts requirement.
UC approved “f” Visual & Performing Arts

Art: Form & Space (one-semester) emphasizes the intermediate level of design with particular concentration of drawing and painting.  Prerequisites: Introduction to Art, an equivalent, or the permission of the teacher after the evaluation of the student's portfolio.

Art: Visual Composition (one-semester) emphasizes space, form and advanced design.  Prerequisites: Introduction to Art, an equivalent, or the permission of the teacher after the evaluation of the student's portfolio.

Studio Art AP is a college level visual arts experience leading to the completion of a portfolio of work.  The portfolio is a vehicle through which students demonstrate the ability to handle the fundamental concerns of the visual arts and earn Advanced Placement credit.
Prerequisites: Introduction to Art, an equivalent, or the permission of the teacher after the evaluation of the student's portfolio.

Graphic Design covers the history, theory and practice of visual communication in both print and digital media. Students will learn the artistic, organizational, and technical aspects necessary to successfully implement design solutions.

Drama introduces students to all phases of theater productions.  The course covers a history of theater and explores theater production and set design.  Students learn basic acting techniques and stage make-up.  In addition to theater, movies and film production is studied.  A unit on puppetry is also included.

Art History AP
is an introduction to the understanding and enjoyment of architecture, sculpture and two-dimensional art. The class begins with Prehistoric art, concluding with art of the Middle Ages in the first semester. The second semester covers art from the Renaissance to the present day. Western art is emphasized, however short units of art from China, Japan, India, Africa and Mesoamerica are integrated into the curriculum. Viewing art first hand with museum trips is an important part of the course.  No previous experience in art is required.

Film & Philosophy (one-semester course) presents full-length movies, short subjects and movie segments to represent the ideas of significant thinkers of our world, classical themes, modern themes and postmodern themes.  The course is not a course in cinematography, but about worldviews as these are represented in film.  Students will practice close listening, observation, analysis and critical thinking.  An emphasis of the course is the virtue of rational discourse and the difference between objective and relative knowledge.  Creative thinking will be encouraged when discussion centers on the meaning and usefulness of alternative scenes and alternative endings to a film.  Five to eight full-length films will be viewed.  Only relevant sections of several additional films will be viewed as they support or contrast with a unit topic.
UC approved “g” Elective

Yearbook (two-semester elective) is offered at both the Junior and Senior High levels, students are responsible for creating several pages of the school yearbook.  Students design, photograph, and write articles for each page and have to meet deadlines specified by the yearbook company. The class will also produce a supplement to the yearbook that will cover spring activities.  This supplement will be approximately 35 pages and will cover school activities through graduation.  The supplement will be delivered to students in late September of the next school year.
