Grading Standards & Policy

Each semester is an accumulation of two nine-week quarters and a final exam. A student’s grades are calculated on a percentage basis:

97-100% = A+ 87-89% = B+ 77-79% = C+ 67-69% = D+ 59-0% = F
93-96% = A 83-86% = B 73-76% = C 63-66% = D  Pass = P
90-92% = A- 80-82% = B- 70-72% = C- 60-62% = D-

Grade Point Average

Grade point averages are calculated for standard classes as follows on a four-point scale:
A-4 B-3 C-2 D-1 F-0

UC/CSU approved honors and Advance Placement courses are calculated on a five-point (weighted) scale:
A-5 B-4 C-3 D-1 (not weighted)

Currently, UC has certified the following courses for weighted credit:
•    Pre-Calculus Honors
•    Calculus AP
•    Statistics AP
•    Chemistry Honors
•    Biology AP
•    Physics AP
•    English Language/Composition AP
•    English Literature/Composition AP
•    Spanish IV /V AP
•    Art History AP
•    Studio Art AP
•    US History AP

Class Rank

Class ranks are determined by the cumulative semester grades in all courses in years nine through twelve.

“Replacing” Grades

A semester grade of "D" is passing, and the student earns 5 credit units toward high school graduation.

For college admission purposes, a "D" earned in foreign languages or math courses is acceptable IF the following semester grade is a "C" or better.  (That's referred to as "validation" by the colleges.)  Teachers of these courses should counsel with "D" students and their parents in order to clarify this point and determine the best course of action.

For English, social studies, and science courses, each semester stands
on its own merit.  Therefore, any semester "D" must be replaced to fulfill college admission subject requirements by retaking that part of the course.
