During his career, John focused his off-the-field time on mentoring students.  He hosted a two-day football camp to benefit the Grand Island YMCA and regularly spoke at schools about the importance of education and the dangers of drugs and alcohol, while also serving as a local spokesperson for the Grand Island chapter of United Way. Since retiring from the NFL, John has spent time coaching high schoolers at Livermore High and now Valley Christian.  He and his wife, Leigh, have four sons who attend Valley Christian and look forward developing "Champions for Life," both on and off the field.
